Featured Entry - Highway Robbery at Rye Country Day School

It was early September and I was signing out of school to got get lunch when it hit me, "you are wasting 900$!" Rye Country Day School has a meal program which charges roughly 900$ for an entire school years worth of food. As a student everyone who pays the fee is allowed to eat lunch at RCDS. This system is great, but I beleive the school takes advantage of seniors. Seniors are given off campus priveleges and are allowed to eat off campus. Assuming it only costs $4 to eat at Lenny's bagels, it would cost a senior about 700$ a year to eat out every day. What I don't understand is why parents and children are willing to pay the $900 cafateria fee, then go off campus to eat (sounds like Rye Country Day though). The School makes a large profit from this "priveledge" awarded to seniors. FLIK, the schools food service provider does not have to order food for almost 90 adults on a daily basis. This is a loophole that I thought was very intersesting. On one hand, families are wasting large amounts of money while the school benefits from this waste.

I believe that the mealplan is paid by semester? My parents managed to get me off of it for the second semester, and they are going to give me money to eat out. I know that kids have done this in the past, and I bet that they have eaten on campus even when they are not on the meal plan. In the end, it is still a poor economic decision for most students to pay for both eating options at the same time.

First of all, I don't many seniors could eat Lenny's bagels every day. Secondly, I don't think I've ever gone out to eat for lunch and only spent 4 dollars, usually I spend around triple that amount. In the end, if you actually calculate it, it is cheaper to eat at school everyday then go out for lunch everyday. The thing is though, its as if the school markets and promotes seniors to go out with lunch because it is a "senior privilege." Therefore, people end up paying for school lunch, but then with this "privilege" stuff ends up going out more for lunch. If the school made it so that we could go out to lunch since eith 10th or 11th grade then going out for lunch would not be that big of a deal for seniors and they would probably end up eating more at school. What I want to know is if the meal plan is already included in tuition or if it is an option?

The meal plan is listed as "optional" in the information about RCDS tuition given on the school's website. Other than the monetary cost of eating lunch off-campus, the main reason that I go out to eat very rarely is that I lose too much time in my day if I leave. It's much faster to just walk to the cafeteria to grab a bite than it is to drive to Port Chester, pick up something, come back to school, and then eat it. I'll usually only go out on Fridays or days on which I have only a little hw - days in which I have time to spare. One of the things that really confuses me is how people can find the time to go off campus to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, just for a beverage. At least if you go for lunch, you're getting a whole meal for the time you spent driving, etc. At Starbucks you're getting an overpriced drink that you could've bought in our cafeteria for 1/8 the price.

Ya I dont know how you can get food for 4 dollars a day or why you would eat at "lennies bagels" every day. It's definitly cheaper to eat at school so I don't see why youd call it highway robber. It's an optional and cheap way to eat and is very good compared with other school lunches

To respond to anonymous...I think what Matt was trying to say is that people are paying the 900$ meal-plan and then opt to go out to eat instead so they end up spending money on food they aren't eating. It may end up being cheaper to eat at school everyday than it would be to go off-campus and grab a sandwich + soda at Rockridge for 8$ (and it isn’t much less if I’m not mistaken) but unless you aren't part of the meal plan you are paying 8$ (for the food you are eating from somewhere other than RCDS) and how ever much money one day of cafeteria food would be added together. That is what I think is so crazy, if I was on the meal plan (which I opted not to be this year because of off-campus privileges) and I decided to go out to lunch everyday I know my dad wouldn't be too happy when he realized the amount of money I was wasting on food I wasn't even eating. Also, I don't think that having off-campus privileges in earlier grades would make going off campus less popular by senior year. I think the main reason people go off-campus is to get away from school for 40minutes in the middle of the day and the food is just a perk. At least that's how I see it.

The problem is that this work on your vehicle, for the most part,
absolutely has to be done. A motor oils pour point tells you how well
it handles cold temperatures without gelling (solidifying).
This is why the old practice of changing straight grade oils to a heavier viscosity in the summer and a lighter viscosity
in the winter is no longer necessary.
